Psychotherapy – What to Expect

Individuals/Couples

The initial consultation allows us to see if ‘The growing room’ is the right fit. During this time we discuss your reasons for making the appointment, gather background information about your concerns and evaluate your needs. This first session is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have. At the end of this session we will be able to offer you a route forward suited to your situation.

Children and Adolescents

If you are a parent and referring a child, then we recommend you prepare the child prior to the visit, making the purpose of the visit clear and confirming that they’ll not be asked to do or say anything they do not wish to.

We generally conduct the first session with the child and parent(s) together, as we find that children are often most comfortable having their parent present. Having you and your child together allows us to see how everyone views the problem, and helps us get background information that will help us create a plan to move forward.

For adolescents age 16 plus, we offer the possibility of meeting with them and the parent(s) separately, if that is what they prefer.

Further evaluation will include an individual meeting with your child, a parent meeting and possibly a family meeting. As with adult therapy, recommendations will be based a variety of factors related to the nature of the problem and its context.

Our Services

Mum’s the word

These intimate groups allow like-minded parents to connect on key issues.

The groups are split into three:

Pre-school, Primary and
Secondary

The aim is to help remove the ‘I’m fine’ ‘Supermum’ culture of our generation by offering a point of reflection, reality and connection.

Adolescent sessions

Age 12 plus clients are welcome at The growing room.

Parents will be encouraged to be part of the therapeutic work.
This will be outlined in the introductory session.

“One in six age 5- to 16-year-olds were identified as having a mental health problem in July 2021 which equates to five children in every classroom.”
(youngminds.org.uk)

“83% of young people stated that the pandemic in 2020 made their mental health worse”
(youngminds.org.uk)

Couples

Relationship counselling (also known as ‘couples counselling’ or ‘marriage counselling’) is an effective form of talking therapy designed to resolve issues within an intimate relationship

Very few relationships exist conflict-free – whether it’s the odd disagreement, repeatedly arguing or you’ve lost the fun element in your relationship – it’s natural to start to question its longevity.

When this begins to falter, our health and happiness can also suffer.

“Marriage rates have fallen to their lowest on record in 2020” (Office for national statistics)

In 2021 divorce rates increased by 9.6%”

One to One

Individual one-on-one therapy, often referred to as psychotherapy, involves meeting with a therapist individually in order to reduce internal suffering, which often causes problematic behavior.

One-on-one therapy can help to break down barriers that interfere with emotional and mental well-being
